MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 18, 2018) – Gray Plant Mooty partnered with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) to publish “A Legal Guide to Privacy and Data Security 2019.”
This privacy guide was developed to inform businesses of the ever-changing legal issues related to privacy and data security. Written for non-lawyers, this is the fourth time Gray Plant Mooty and DEED have collaborated to publish and distribute a privacy guide.
Noteworthy in this 2019 edition is coverage of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that became effective May 25, 2018 and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which will affect any business that collects personal information of California residents.
“This new California privacy law, which imposes GDPR-like requirements and allows for a private right of action, becomes effective Jan. 1, 2020. It is not too early for businesses to prepare for compliance with the CCPA,” said Michael R. Cohen, principal attorney and privacy officer at Gray Plant Mooty. Cohen is the primary author of this guide.
“Privacy and data security continue to be evolving issues for businesses both here in Minnesota and across the country,” said DEED Commissioner Shawntera Hardy. “DEED’s partnership with Gray Plant Mooty allows us to develop guidance that business owners can use to ensure they are following best practices.”
